How we address the pandemic will affect Animal shelter design for a generation

  • Adoption and surrender lobbies must be large enough to accommodate social distancing.

  • Curbside pick-up and drop-off may be utilized.

  • Filling out surrender documents and adoption papers might occur outside the shelter building on a porch or patio, or perhaps in a community room that is large enough to allow social distancing, or…

  • Documentation may be completed entirely online.

  • Covid-19 is showing up in intake animals, necessitating the need for immediate triage and bathing.

  • Personal protective equipment should be worn by staff when handling untested animals.

  • Viewing adoptable animals should be through glass. Separation by kennel grating only is not sanitary enough.

  • 100% fresh air should be provided in kennel spaces with 10 air changes per hour minimum.

  • Provide integrated cleaning systems for quaternary disinfectants Rescue or Accel.

This is a shelter Brevard Architecture recently designed that addresses these needs.
