Design considerations for Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter / by Brent Brevard

Brevard Architecture recently completed the Mount Pleasant Animal Care and Adoption Center in Mt. Pleasant, TX. It has some design elements that might apply to your new shelter...

  • Animals come first...when customers walk in the front doors, they are welcomed by rows of adoptable dogs and cats, easily seen in a setting reminiscent of a pet store.

  • Minimal staff...the 8,200 s.f. shelter is manned by 4 staff members, typically 2 at the counter and 2 taking care of animals.

  • Adoption separate from surrender...the surrender entrance is on the side of the building, separate from the main entry.

  • Efficient animal care... indoor/outdoor kennels make managing the dogs easy during cleaning procedures.

  • Efficient construction...the simple shape of the building allowed it to be constructed efficiently to stay within a tight construction budget. The front elevation shows that just a few additions to an otherwise plain gable end allows the facade to be interesting and inviting.
